Mission: The Conservation Society of Pohnpei works to preserve and enhance the natural heritage of Pohnpei State by promoting community-led resource management and compatible economic development.
The Conservation Society of Pohnpei (CSP) was founded in 1998 by a group of concerned citizens and is Pohnpei’s only community-led, non-governmental conservation organization. CSP aims to increase community involvement in the conservation and management of Pohnpei’s natural resources, build local capacity through public and private partnerships, develop alternatives to unsustainable practices and promote laws and policies that support these objectives.
CSP’s Board is composed of 13 members who come from a variety of backgrounds including: environmental, academia, traditional leadership, the private sector, women’s groups, youth associations, government, law, religion, financial institutions and counseling.
Goals:
- Dedicated to work in harmony with government and private partners to promote community resource management, by educating the people about the benefits derived from protecting Pohnpei’s natural systems and environment.
- Committed to promote conservation policies and laws that enhance and protect our natural heritage.
- Use non-confrontational approaches to develop solutions that protect habitat, conserve biodiversity and provide for compatible economic development.
